The infante Enrique of Castile, a prince of high lineage and great-grandson of Frederick II, enters the Italian scene during the stormy years of the Hohenstaufen dynasty's twilight and its replacement by Angevin power. Don Enrique—or Don Enrico to the Italians—was an outstanding mercenary and condottiero who offered his services to the highest bidder, thereby amassing fairy-tale wealth and earning legendary fame as an invincible man.
