You all know this image: The Accolade, the ceremony of knighting. A princess, a knight, a romantic dream. That is how we imagine the Middle Ages… but let me reveal a secret: it is an illusion. For a princess, reality was a very different story. Much harsher.
Take Violante of Hohenstaufen. She was Frederick II’s beloved daughter, born of his great love, Bianca Lancia. And yet, not even the Emperor’s affection could save her. At just thirteen years old, Violante became a political pawn, given in marriage to a man twice her age: Richard of Caserta.
Her mother, Bianca, tried to oppose the marriage. She knew Richard was a harsh and hot-tempered man. But a mother’s voice carried little weight against reasons of state. Frederick needed to reward one of his most loyal supporters, and Violante became the prize.
The wedding was celebrated in 1246, in the magnificent setting of Castel del Monte… but for her, it marked the beginning of a prison.
In Caserta, Violante was not treated as a wife, but almost as a concubine. Forced into total obedience, far removed from the dreams of courtly life. Hers is not a fairy tale, but the story of a woman living in the shadow of power.
